French designer Emilie Sarnel has worked internationally, as well as presented her illustration works at exhibitions in Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Professionally trained in graphic design, Emilie graduated from renown French design school "Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs", in Paris. After graduation, Emilie went to Shanghai to provide art direction for the creative advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, that later relocated Emilie to Tokyo in 2009. In 2011, Emilie left Tokyo for Hong Kong where she worked as a Art Director for the product design company Native Union. After two years based in Hong Kong in May 2013, Emilie set up her own creative studio, Pleaseconfirm Ltd. Among various illustration projects, her studio Pleaseconfirm ltd., focuses on visual identities, editorial, packaging and art collaborations.
My drawings are usually related to the places I travelled to, lived in, to personal experiences, or dreams and places I would dream to go to. It’s a way for me to question my environment, and raise what is different, and why I like it or not. It’s a very special experience to live so far away from home for such a long time, so I think it’s definitely driving my art motivation.
I use mainly black and white ink or paint and then play around adding colors. I like the deepness of the black and the vibrancy it creates on the paper with the white and the other colors. It’s also the black of the Chinese ink, and Asian art will always be a source of inspiration.
